The 2013 NCSSM Food Drive Hall Competition Challenge is a competition between all residence halls at NCSSM to see which hall can make the largest positive impact on our community. Each dollar donated to an individual hall's donation page will be converted into 2.5 pound of food. This conversion will be divided by the number of students on hall to calculate the pounds per student donated. The hall with the highest pound per student ratio will win the 2013 NCSSM Food Drive Hall Competition Challenge and win a 32" RCA flatscreen TV. The runner up will win a DVD player.

The idea of the NCSSM Food Drive began in 2009 when the Residential Life Assistants on Reynolds 1E2E2D decided to have a hall them of world records for the year. During RLA Week while working on door decorations and bulletin boards, the thought of attempting a Guinness World Record was thrown around, and soon thereafter they applied to set a record for the largest gathering of nerds. This record had a participation requirement of donating 1 nonperishable item to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC to be counted as a 'nerd'. Fortunately, Guinness World Records denied our record, and as you can say, the rest is history! In its first year, the NCSSM Food Drive collected 319,990 pounds of food, and was still short of the single day, single location record. On March 5, 2011, NCSSM, along with many sponsors and partners, broke the record by collecting 559,885 pounds of food.
