Hunger Relief Day began at the N.C. State Fair in 1993 and since then, fairgoers have donated over 6.1 million pounds of food to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and its partners. It has become one of the largest one-day canned-food drives in the state.

Smithfield Foods Hunger Relief Day will take place on Thursday, Oct. 19th. Fairgoers can bring six cans of food per person to the fair gates to exchange for free admission.

Hunger is a serious problem every day in central and eastern North Carolina. Working families, children, and seniors—struggled to consistently get food on their table; especially nutritious food.

Our community is at a critical point in the work of providing food security to our neighbors. While health and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has lessened, the programs that we know worked to keep people nourished and provided support are not being continued: programs like SNAP Emergency Allotments that have now expired, the adjustments to the Thrifty Food Plan, and other supports, like the Child Tax Credit. In addition to the loss of those programs, families are still experiencing the impact of extreme inflation in the cost of goods and services.

The food collected on Hunger Relief Day will go a long way in providing much needed relief for our friends and neighbors.
