School Pantry Program

School Pantry Program

The Food Bank's School Pantry Program is a partnership with local schools that allows food insecure children and their families to receive food assistance on or around school grounds. These pantries are located in a familiar location, making pick-up easy and convenient for students and working parents.

When they visit a school pantry, families receive enough food for about 20-25 meals with food items such as soup, brown rice, oatmeal, peanut butter, juice, canned vegetables, and fresh produce when available. They also often receive nutrition education materials including healthy recipes and nutrition tips.

This program is the newest of our Kids Meals & More child nutrition programs. We believe its innovative approach will not only provide children with more nutritious meals when they are out of school, but it will also help their entire family have enough food on the dinner table.

Thanks to generous grant funding from the Biogen Foundation and the William R. Kenan Charitable Trust, we will host ten school pantries at elementary and middle schools throughout our service area during the 2015-16 school year.

Durham School Pantry

“What we’ve got to realize is if we’ve got a hungry child, we’ve got a hungry family,” said Marcelle Thomas, Title I Parent Coordinator and School Improvement Specialist for Durham Public Schools. “We are now to the point where filling up a kid’s backpack to the brim with food to take home over the weekend just isn’t enough.” Read more about Durham school pantries on our blog: Hunger Matters.

"We at the Biogen Foundation want kids to experience that science is fun, science is for everyone and that they can make a difference in the world through science. But we know that children who are focused on being hungry can’t focus on learning science or anything else. When we learned that more than half of the students in the Triangle are food insecure, we decided to double our Food Bank support for childhood hunger programs.” --Joydeep Ganguly, Biogen Foundation board member
