As the weather becomes warmer and many of our thoughts turn to vacation, we know that in the 34 counties the Food Bank serves, just under 600,000 people (including more than 175,000 children) are worried about their budgets being stretched even further by rising electric bills, extra child care needs, and the absence of school breakfasts & lunches.

We have a multi-pronged approach to tacking summer hunger, and some suggested posts and graphics in the SMA Dropbox to go with each.

1. Kids Summer Meals

Kids Summer Meals are underway! Also known as the Summer Food Service Program, this USDA program ensures that children in low-income areas continue to receive nutritious meals when they do not have access to school lunch or breakfast. The Food Bank sponsors this program by providing feeding sites with breakfast and lunch at no cost. Community-based organizations operate these feeding sites at schools, churches, and youth centers.

 2. Distributing even more food through our local Partner Agency food pantries

Our data shows that we distribute more food in summer (June/July) than we do around the holidays (November/December) Fortunately, we live in the agriculture-rich state of North Carolina where farmers have green thumbs and hearts of gold.

Instead it reaches the tables of people that need it! http://bit.ly/2wy0mVr #NoOneGoesHungry #farmtofoodbank #gottobenc

3. Donations Matched to help us reach our goal of 3.9 million meals by July 31

Our goal is to raise 3.9 million meals for the #StopSummerHunger initiative by July 31. And during the months of June and July, your donation is DOUBLED- meaning every dollar can provide not 5 but 10 meals for the community!

Click to share: twitter facebook LinkedIn  Every #StopSummerHunger gift you give to @FoodBankCENC before July 31 will be doubled – up to $102,500! foodbankcenc.org/stopsummerhunger #noonegoeshungry

Hurricane Preparedness

June marks the official start of Hurricane Season. Our Eastern Branches continue to support communities still recovering and rebuilding from Hurricane Florence. While we thoroughly hope there will be no major storms this year, now is the time to prepare.
