My name is Caitlin and I am one of the two Summer Food Service Program Assistants this year with the Food Bank’s Kids Summer Meals Program. We work hard to provide children across our 34 counties with daily nutritious breakfasts and lunches while school is out for the summer.
My colleague Ke’pe and I have the opportunity to travel and work with our Summer Feeding Sites to ensure they follow State and Food Bank regulations, support site supervisors with the resources needed to operate the programs, and provide kids with good-tasting, well-balanced meals they can look forward to each day.
From my own experience, I’ve learned how real an issue hunger is and how prevalent it is in every community. For some of these kids, we are serving them the only meals they may eat during the day. That is a truly humbling reality, one which we see daily as we visit these sites.
On one visit, a child was trying to stuff his pocket with a sandwich during lunchtime. Per the structure of the program, the site supervisor told the boy he had to eat his sandwich during the lunch hour and could not take it home. The boy said he wanted to save it and take it home because he knew he likely wouldn’t be getting anything else to eat that day.
Stories like this and others that we hear over the course of the summer keep our Kids Summer Meals team driven to make sure our counties’ kids are getting fed well this summer.
Thank you for your continued support of the Food Bank during the summer. Your contributions help grow our program each year and allow us to continue serving the increasing needs of our community so that none of our children go hungry.
Best to you,
